Description from the seller
Signed handwritten letter by Roger Martin du Gard, dated January 25, 1936, in Nice.
Written in black ink on a double sheet of watermarked vellum paper.
Warm letter in which Roger Martin du Gard thanks a friend architect for his help and highlights his uprightness, sense of duty, and dignity. He insists on saying that the problems encountered at Tertre are not his responsibility, even if his interlocutor strives to resolve the situation once again. The writer also mentions the competence of Vercelletto, on whom he affirms he can rely to solve the difficulties related to the house.
You are not only an excellent architect, dear friend, but also a classy guy. In the mess of the current world, it is comforting to meet men of good caliber who maintain a sense of scruples, responsibility, and, to say the least, dignity.
I had recommended to Vercelletto to avoid at all costs bringing you to Tertre. I truly disliked bothering you again for faults — if there are faults — for which you are not personally responsible at all. You understand me. But I see that it is a lost cause, and that you want, once again, to do things very chicly. All I can do is thank you once more.
We can trust Vercelletto completely. He is a wise, honest man, and he possesses a professional skill quite rare in a small town like Mamers. Between you two, you'll probably save us from trouble before the Tertre rots away under the water!..
Personal letter, revealing his attachment to the Tertre, his Sarthese country house, and his perspective on the trusting relationships he maintained with his close collaborators.
Dimensions: 13.5 x 21 cm
Condition: Good condition. See photos for more details.
