Five volume 1750 edition of R. P. de Carrieres Sainte Bible with a literal commentary, bound in leather and featuring frontispieces, a notable reference for biblical study.
Description from the seller
CARRIERES. Holy Bible containing the Old and New Testaments, with a literal commentary.
Paris, Huart et Moreau, Desaint et Saillant, Durand, 1750; 5 vols. in-4 (out of 6), mottled calfskin, spine with raised bands and decoration, red edges.
Approximately 650 pp. per volume. Frontispiece by Sornique after De Seve, engraved vignettes.
"Father de Carrières made his name famous with a literal commentary on all the books of the Bible, a commentary of an entirely new kind. This commentary consists of inserting a few phrases or half-phrases, often even just one or two words, into the text to make it accessible to the simplest of the faithful. These short intercalations are in italics so that the reader does not confuse the commentator's extensive additions with the sacred text. The selection is made with such taste, the author has so perfectly captured the spirit of this divine book, that one hardly notices the difference between the commentary and the original text." Michaud, Universal Dictionary.
Volume 5 is missing.
Wear to the bindings, volume 3 in very poor condition (see photo), scattered foxing, worn corners. Overall, however, the set is acceptable (except for volume 3). Sold as is.
