Kikujiro Fukushima - Report from the Battleground Sanrizuka 1969-1977(With OBI) - 1977

Photographer Kikujirō Fukushima, a leading figure in post-war Japanese photography, presents his photobook “Report from the Battlefield: Sanrizuka 1969-1977 (With OBI)”. While running a watch shop in his native Yamaguchi Prefecture, he gained sudden prominence with the documentary “Pikadon” (1961), in which he, then an amateur photographer, relentlessly pursued atomic bomb survivors. After divorcing in his forties, he moved to Tokyo with his three children. Amidst pursuing intensifying struggles across the country, he began questioning the oppression by the state and government. Thereafter, he dedicated his life's work to documenting social issues: student movements, politics and the military, pollution, welfare, and more. By depicting ‘anti-establishment and anti-state’ movements in a radical manner, he drew the scrutiny of the public security police. Despite facing ambushes, wiretapping, and even having his house set on fire, he remained true to his style as a genuine photojournalist. This book documents the Sanrizuka struggle, a scene pursued by numerous photojournalists including Kazuo Kitai, Takashi Hamaguchi, and Michio Mitome, through the lens of Kikujiro Fukushima over approximately 11 years. The Sanrizuka struggle saw the mobilisation of over 500,000 riot police, resulting in 7,000 casualties and over 2,500 arrests. With dust jacket.
