Foi-lhe creditada a destruição de 138 tanques e 132 armas anti-tanque, juntamente com um número desconhecido de outros veículos blindados, fazendo dele um dos maiores ases panzer da Alemanha, juntamente com Johannes Bölter, Ernst Barkmann, Otto Carius e Kurt Knispel, que foi o maior de todos, com a marca de 168 tanques destruídos.
