AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

A finely carved Balinese wooden statue, measuring 32.5cm in height and weighing 1017g, depicting the moon goddess Dewi Ratih emerging from the jaws of the demon Kala Rau.

According to Hindu legend, Kala Rau was caught trying to sip from the fountain of immortality by the moon goddess Dewi Ratih, who reported this crime to lord Vishnu. Angered by this infraction, for the fountain was reserved for exclusive use only by the gods, Vishnu threw his disc at Kala Rau, thus beheading him. But the nectar of immortality had already reached the monster's throat so only his head survived, now immortal and eternally pursuing Dewi Ratih in vengeful anger, sometimes briefly catching her but unable to swallow her, in so doing causing a lunar eclipse.
Estimated age: circa 1920s-1930s.

Condition: Good, no significant damages or repairs. Miniscule chip to the headdress. Minor wear commensurate with age.
