Description from the seller
Work Title: Autumn (秋)
Artist: Kimio Ishii (石井公男)
Technique: Woodblock print (木版画)
The artist’s signature and red seal are inscribed on the lower right corner of the plate
Paper Size: 27.2 × 24.2 cm (10.71 × 9.53 in)
Paper Material: Washi (和紙)
This exquisite woodblock print was created in the 1990s by Kimio Ishii (石井公男), a modern Japanese painter and printmaker. Crafted using the traditional Japanese woodblock color printing technique, the work features rich colors with a tactile texture—it not only carries on the tradition of delicate depictions of natural landscapes in Japanese printmaking but also incorporates the formal aesthetics of modern art. The composition adopts a layered structure of “distant view (mountain peaks + sky) - middle view (autumnal forest) - close view (lake + reflection)”, creating a distinct sense of spatial depth. Warm tones (orange, yellow) bring out the splendor of the autumnal forest, while cool tones (blue, purple) set a tranquil mood for the mountain peaks and sky; the contrast between warm and cool hues precisely accentuates the autumn atmosphere. The signature and red seal in the lower right corner of the artwork serve as the artist’s identifiers.
Affected by the passage of time, the washi paper of the print shows slight yellowing due to oxidation, yet the overall condition remains excellent.
Artist’s Notes
Kimio Ishii studied under Keigetsu Shōrin (松林桂月), a deceased Japanese painter of the Nitten (日展) system who was awarded the Order of Culture (文化勲章), in 1956 (the 31st year of the Shōwa (昭和) era). He has won numerous awards at the Chiba Prefectural Art Exhibition, and first had his works selected for the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition (Nitten (日展)) in 1961 (the 36th year of the Shōwa (昭和) era), continuing to participate in the exhibition ever since. After the passing of Keigetsu Shōrin (松林桂月), he studied under Gensō Okuda (奥田元宋), a Japanese painter of the Nitten (日展) system who represents the modern Japanese painting circle and was also awarded the Order of Culture (文化勲章). His works Mount Tanigawa (谷川岳) (1995, the 27th Nitten (日展), collected by the main hall) and Awaiting Spring (待春) (1997, the 29th Nitten (日展), collected by the main hall) received the Special Selection Award. He is a painter who has consistently depicted the landscapes of Japan’s mountainous regions.
