Aizu nuri会津塗 A traditional technique passed down since the Edo period. The auspicious designs and beautiful decorations are appealing. Aizu lacquerware is a traditional craft handed down in the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture. It is also known as Aizu-nuri (lacquerware). It has been designated a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and a nationally designated traditional craft.
Historically, it flourished earlier than Tsugaru lacquerware and Wajima lacquerware. It employs a wide variety of techniques, including mother-of-pearl inlay, lacquer painting, dry lacquer, maki-e (gold-spangled maki-e), and flower lacquering. Woods used include horse chestnut, maple, zelkova, red zelkova, magnolia, and cherry.
