Description from the seller
Original edition. Complete set bound in uniform, comprising the four volumes of the Traité des nerfs and the two volumes of the traité de l'épilepsie by Tissot, followed by Catalepsy, Ecstasy, Anesthesia, Migraine, and Brain Diseases.
Published between 1778 and 1780 by Didot, except for the last volume, published in 1783 by Théophile Barrois.
Tissot's work allows, in a study on the treatment of madness, to more generally discover what remedies were then prescribed for the cure of the mad and to observe that 'psychological' treatments were anecdotal (Le Traitement des aliénés en France dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIème siècle, 2002).
Set in a beautiful full marbled calf binding, with a gilt spine decorated with compartments adorned with fleurons and small gilt tools, with the title and volume number in gilt initials, blue speckled edges, and decorated cuts.
Beautiful copy, in good overall condition. Small leather loss at the foot of the first cover of volume IV. Some pages have browned, a few stains, and rare foxing.
Samuel Auguste André David Tissot (1728-1797) was a Swiss doctor.
He was known during his lifetime for an extraordinary reputation and was the personal physician to many high-ranking European personalities, notably the king of Poland and the Elector of Hanover. He was consulted by people from all over Europe through correspondence.
It was said of him that he was 'the doctor of princes and the prince of doctors.' He owed this fame to his numerous works, particularly those dedicated to onanism and his studies on epilepsy.
