The FIFA World Cup Uruguay 1930 was the first edition of the FIFA World Cup organized by FIFA. It was held in Uruguay from July 13 to July 30, 1930. FIFA decided to award the organization of the tournament to Uruguay in commemoration of the centenary of the Pledge of the Constitution, which the nation was celebrating during July of that same year, among other reasons.
Thirteen national teams participated in the tournament (12 invited teams plus the host), divided into 4 groups: 3 groups of 3 teams and 1 group of 4 teams. The first two matches in the history of the World Cup took place simultaneously on July 13, during which the United States defeated Belgium 3-0, and France beat Mexico 4-1. The first goal of the competition was scored by the French player Lucien Laurent.
The selections of Argentina, the United States, Uruguay, and Yugoslavia advanced to the semifinals after winning their respective groups. In the final, the host Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in front of more than 68,000 spectators, winning their first FIFA-organized World Cup title.
