Art Nouveau silvered and gilt coin case in France, ca. 1900, with double compartments for sovereigns and Napoleons, measuring about 7 cm by 1.5 cm by 3 cm and weighing 33 g, stamped P Ↄ P and EXTR A BLANC on the base.
Description from the seller
Art Nouveau silvered and gilded coin box – France, circa 1900 – for gold coins / sovereigns of Napoleons.
Elegant French Art Nouveau coin box, made of silver-plated white metal (metal extra blanc) with a gilded interior. The oval box is richly decorated on the top with a relief of holly leaves and berries, a popular motif from the Belle Époque around 1900.
Inside, there are two round coin compartments with fine guilloche lids, intended for small gold coins such as the French 20 francs Napoléon or the British sovereign. The interior is fully gilded and repeats the holly motif in relief.
Marked at the bottom with a square maker's mark 'P Ↄ P' and the inscription 'EXTRA BLANC,' referring to the white base metal with silver plating used — a high-quality French finish from the transition between the 19th and 20th centuries. A French quality finish from the Belle Époque.
A rare and charming object for collectors of Art Nouveau, silverware, or numismatics.
