【Product details】
This is a Showa-period portfolio of high-quality ukiyo-e reprints produced by The Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints(アダチ版画研究所), issued as part of “Selected Masterpieces of Ukiyo-e Landscapes.” The original series appears to have comprised a larger body of works; this set contains twenty-three prints drawn from numbers 1 to 25, with numbers 21 and 24 not present. Each print is housed in its own numbered paper mount (not removable) and accompanied by its individual envelope.
According to information we were able to find, this Adachi series seems originally to have been issued as 18-print portfolios, with two different 18-print sets (36 designs in total) sharing the same series title. The hard case included here is slightly too small to comfortably hold all 23 prints, which suggests that it was designed for an 18-print selection. Our impression is that this lot consists of one complete 18-print set in its original case, together with five additional prints from another set in the same series. However, because we cannot verify the original configuration with absolute certainty, we are offering it simply as a mixed group of 23 prints in total, exactly as shown in the photos.
The artists and titles present in this set include celebrated masters such as Torii Kiyonaga, Hishikawa Moronobu, Katsukawa Shunshō, Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Utagawa Toyohiro, Kobayashi Kiyochika, Suzuki Harunobu, Totoya Hokkei, Ryuryukyo Shinsai, Shotei Hokuju, and others. Commentary sheets are provided in Japanese and English for the included prints, with the exception of No. 14, Utagawa Kunisada “Kiri-naka no Sansui” (Misty Mountain Landscape), whose commentary is missing. One long panorama print is folded as issued.
Most prints are in very good condition, with fresh colours and crisp impressions. A few prints show minor foxing. Some paper mounts, thin interleaving papers, and envelopes display stains or foxing consistent with age. The portfolio hard case shows fading and foxing to the title label. Please review all photos carefully for the precise condition of each component.
Dimensions of Hard Case: approx. H 54 cm W 39 cm D 4 cm
Dimensions of Prints: approx. H 19-58 cm W 18.3-46.3 cm
Dimensions of Paper Frame: approx. H 38 cm W 53 cm
