Quarter leather binding with green printed boards depicting leaves, with gilt decorated and lettered spine, green edges, and marbled endpapers. Very rare first edition of this collection of 10 Chinese tales that were translated be Jean-Pierre Abel-Rémusat as well as other Sinologists of his time, notably John Francis Davis and P. P. Thoms. Comes with an engraved frontispiece for each volume (3 in total).
Rubbing, bumping, and wear to the boards and spine. Some damage in the top-left of the front board. Pencil markings in the front flyleaves. The second flyleaf has the top corner cut off. Pen inscription on the title page of Vol I. Pencil markings in the back flyleaves. Browning, spotting, and some cockling throughout. The text and illustrations are clear, and the binding is solid. Overall, a nice copy in good+ condition.
