Description from the seller
A fine Egyptian black hardstone amulet in the shape of a clenched fist. Linear incisions portray the four fingers curled inwards and a thumb at the end. A cylindrical wrist features a diagonal incisions, perhaps representing a bracelet. The pendant is perforated through the palm of the hand for suspension. Some minor wear, pitting, earthy encrustations and scratches to the surface, consistent with age.
The Egyptians wore amulets alongside other pieces of jewellery. They were decorative, but also served a practical purpose, being considered to bestow power and protection upon the wearer. Many of the amulets have been found inside the wrappings of mummies, as they were used to prepare the deceased for the afterlife. Fist amulets were a particular feature of the 1st Intermediate Period, however examples have been found from New Kingdom and Late Period burials. The amulet was meant to bestow the power of dexterity and movement upon the wearer.
Measurements: L 2.3 cm X W 1 cm
Provenance: Ex SM collection London, acquired 1970s-2000s.
