Andrea Locatelli or Lucatelli (Rome, December 19, 1695 – Rome, February 19, 1741) Field of
18th-century oil on canvas attributable to Italy, likely from the mid-1700s.
The painting depicts a pastoral scene set in a classical landscape: a shepherd rests among his livestock, surrounded by cows, goats, and sheep, while in the background, gentle hills extend under a golden sky. Beside him stands a large ancient statue, placed on a pedestal and surrounded by ruins, symbolizing a glorious past now engulfed by nature.
The work combines the tranquility of rural life with the melancholic presence of antiquity, creating a serene, contemplative, and timeless atmosphere.
