It was issued from 1821 to 1829 in the name of Mahmoud II 1785-1839 (Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and Caliph of Islam from 1808 to 1839) and minted at the Dar-el-Sika of Algiers, the central bank of the Regency of Algiers under Hussein Dey (1764-1838), the last Dey of Algiers from 1818 to 1830, following the invasion by France in June 1830.
