Estate and Historical Significance
Founded in 1605, Weingut Fritz Haag is one of Germany’s most historic and prestigious Riesling producers. Located in Brauneberg in the heart of the Mosel Valley, the estate has been continuously family-owned for over four centuries. The vineyards of Brauneberger Juffer and Juffer-Sonnenuhr are legendary, once praised by Napoleon and favored by Thomas Jefferson.
Under Wilhelm Haag, the estate gained international acclaim and was named Winemaker of the Year in 1994 by Gault Millau. Since 2005, Oliver Haag has continued the tradition of excellence, earning accolades such as Collection of the Year and consistently high scores from top critics.
VDP Membership and Grosses Gewächs Classification
Fritz Haag is a member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter VDP, Germany’s elite association of quality wine estates. The Grosses Gewächs designation is reserved for dry wines from VDP Grosse Lage vineyards, Germany’s equivalent to Grand Cru sites. These wines must meet strict standards including hand harvesting, low yields, and extended aging.
The Brauneberger Juffer vineyard is classified as Grosse Lage, with steep south-facing slopes of blue Devonian slate that impart intense minerality and finesse. The GG designation confirms this wine’s origin from one of Germany’s top terroirs and its status as a dry Riesling of the highest caliber.
Vineyard and Vinification
Vineyard: Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr – Grosse Lage
Grape Variety: Riesling
Vinification: Hand-harvested, wild fermentation in large oak Fuder and stainless steel, extended lees contact

Vintage Overview – 2018 Germany
The 2018 vintage was one of the warmest and driest in Mosel history, resulting in fully ripe grapes and generous yields. Despite the heat, top producers like Fritz Haag preserved freshness and minerality, crafting dry Rieslings of remarkable balance and aging potential. The wines are expressive, concentrated, and structured, with vibrant acidity and long cellaring capacity.
Critical Acclaim and Aging Potential
The 2018 Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr GG Riesling has received widespread praise from critics and wine publications.

Tasting notes highlight aromas of melon, yellow apple, citrus, and quince, with a saline minerality and hints of muscat and spice. The palate is concentrated yet elegant, with remarkable length and vibrancy.
