Japan-origin original hanging scroll by Bakusen 麦仙, hand-signed Showa-period painting titled Absolute Auction – “Sparrow and Magnolia”, hand-painted on silk, 188 cm high by 53.5 cm wide, weight 793 g, with original wooden storage box, in good condition.
Description from the seller
A refined Japanese hanging scroll depicting a sparrow perched among blooming magnolia branches, delicately hand-painted on silk by the artist Bakusen 麦仙 during the Showa period.
The artist demonstrates exceptional sensitivity in capturing early spring: soft, fresh green buds, elegant white magnolia petals, and the lively presence of a sparrow resting quietly on a branch.
The subtle gradation of colours and detailed brushwork create a gentle and atmospheric composition typical of modern Nihonga aesthetics.
The scroll comes with its original wooden storage box, adding both protection and collectable value.
Mounted in light-toned brocade with wooden scroll ends, the piece brings a serene and elegant presence, ideal for seasonal display or for collectors of bird-and-flower paintings.
Condition
Please judge the condition from the photos.
The scroll shows light age-related wear such as minor wrinkles, faint spots, and gentle creases consistent with vintage Showa-period works.
The painting surface remains clean and vivid, and the overall presentation is very good for its age.

Dear Valued Buyers in Europe, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you. Thanks to your continued support, I have been able to carry on my business for more than ten years. As of June 28, 2025, new regulations have taken full effect in the European Union concerning the importation of cultural property from outside the EU. Under these rules, when items are classified as “Cultural Property” or as antiques over 100 years old, and they are not accompanied by an Export Permit for Cultural Property, certain restrictions may apply under both Italian law and EU regulations. This Export Permit for Cultural Property has traditionally been required when exporting items such as swords, and obtaining it generally takes about one month. For this reason, when shipping hanging scrolls that are more than 100 years old, I will continue to use the same HS code as for those less than 100 years old. I sincerely ask for your kind understanding regarding this matter. With gratitude and respect,
