Antique silver engine-turned snuff box with enamelled cover, hallmarked by Henry Clifford Davis, Birmingham, 1926. The cover is painted in rich blues and golds with an oriental scene depicting a gentleman in the foreground, with temple architecture, mountains, fishing boats, and herons set within a stylised riverside landscape. The reverse is worked with an intricate engine-turned guilloché pattern, while the interior retains its original gilt finish.
This snuff box represents a fusion of high-quality Birmingham silverwork and early 20th-century fascination with exotic chinoiserie decoration. Both functional and decorative, it exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of the period.
