Elke Ethiopische priester heeft een handkruis (meskel in het Amhaars) waarmee hij de gelovigen zegent. Omdat een priester het kruis voor langere tijd vasthoudt, moet het handkruis licht en gemakkelijk te dragen zijn. Ze bestaan meestal uit drie delen: het kruis zelf, de schacht en de basis. De basis dient als tegenwicht voor het kruis. Het kruis is met de hand gemaakt volgens de verloren-was-methode en is een uniek stuk. De oudste handkruizen zijn soms meer dan 1000 jaar oud.
