Description from the seller

Very beautiful and decorative English brass vestas / safety box with the original inscription on the bottom: 'The Royal Approved Safety Box for Wax Vesta Lights.' This cylindrical table model was used in the 19th century to keep wax vestalucifers dry and to safely strike them on the ribbed plate at the bottom.
The object consists of:
A richly engraved brass cylinder with ornate late Victorian ornamentation.
a matching lid with floral decoration and a knob
A matchstrike plate (grooved underside) used to ignite matches.
This type of object was used in smoking rooms, salons, and men's chambers during the late 19th century and belongs to the classic English brass smoking accessories from the Victorian era.

In good, authentic condition with usual signs of age and patina appropriate to the period. No restorations known.
