A 1950s ink drawing titled Portret van een vrouw by Johan Dijkstra, with an Atelier Johan Dijkstra stamp and a focused expression in good condition.
Description from the seller
Johan Dijkstra (1896–1978) was a Dutch painter, graphic artist, and illustrator, and one of the most important representatives of the Groningen art circle De Ploeg. Dijkstra played a crucial role within this expressionist movement, which aimed for innovation in color, form, and technique. His work is characterized by powerful, bright colors, free brushwork, and a direct, sometimes intuitive approach to the subject.
Dijkstra mainly painted landscapes, cityscapes, and portraits, often inspired by the Groningen landscape and city life. Additionally, he was active as a book illustrator and church painter. His early work shows pronounced expressionist influences, while his later oeuvre adopted a more lyrical and impressionist touch. With his open, experimental attitude and his colorful visual language, Dijkstra is regarded as one of the most influential Groningen artists of the 20th century.
This loose, lively drawing depicts a woman in profile, captured with spontaneous, sketchy lines. Using subtle washes in gray and sepia, Dijkstra created a soft lighting effect and a sense of depth, while the dynamic lines emphasize the movement and posture of the figure. The woman appears lost in thought, with a hand placed against her face. The drawing exudes an intimate atmosphere and showcases Dijkstra’s skill in creating a powerful and characterful impression with minimal means.
The work has a stamp in the bottom right with 'Atelier Johan Dijkstra'.
Dimensions of work with frame: 52 x 45 cm.
Dimensions of work without: 32 x 26 cm
Viewing is, of course, possible. Additionally, we have our own in-house framing workshop, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary. Furthermore, we collaborate with restorers from the professional organization: 'Restauratoren Nederland'. If you wish to make use of this service, we would of course be happy to hear from you.
