保尊良朔 Hoson Ryosaku (1896-1953)
Hoson Ryosaku was born in Hotaka Hongo, Nagano Prefecture. He studied under Hashimoto Seisui of the Japan Art Institute, through whom he also absorbed influences from Hashimoto Gahō. Recognized early at the Institute’s exhibitions, he developed a distinctive style in landscapes and bird-and-flower painting, combining classical Tosa traditions with modern sensibilities. In 1938 he co-founded the Shinkō Bijutsuin (New Art Institute), serving as organizer and juror while fostering younger artists. During the war he contributed to regional art associations, and after 1950 he helped revive the Shinkō Bijutsuin. He is remembered for refined depictions of nature and his role in advancing modern Japanese painting.

This atmospheric hanging scroll presents a serene moonlit forest scene, where a deer stands quietly beside a flowing stream, framed by tall pines and mist-covered hills. A solitary figure walks along a winding path, evoking themes of introspection and harmony with nature. In Japanese aesthetics, the deer is a symbol of purity, longevity, and spiritual presence, often associated with sacred forests and Shinto tradition. The full moon suggests transience and enlightenment, while the forest and stream reflect the quiet rhythms of seasonal change and inner contemplation. Together, these elements form a poetic landscape that invites reflection and emotional stillness. The artist, Hoson Ryosaku, was active in the early 20th century and known for his refined depictions of nature and seasonal motifs. His works often blend classical influences with a modern sensibility. This scroll is accompanied by a storage box bearing an appraisal inscription by Hoson Kazuo, adding provenance and cultural significance to the piece.
