A fine 1731 illustrated edition of Claudius Aelianus’s Varied History with Latin and Greek text, notes by Abraham Gronovius, bound in ivory parchment with frontispiece and engraved vignettes.
Description from the seller
Very beautiful edition of the Varied History of Claude Elien, nicknamed Élien the Sophist, published in 1731. One of the best known editions of this compilation of Greek stories, with the text in Latin and Greek, complemented by the notes of Abraham Gronov.
Decorated with a very beautiful title-frontispiece and a few vignettes finely engraved in the text.
Set with a remarkable binding in full ivory vellum, with cold-stamped lozenge framing and composition on the covers, spine decorated with handwritten title, and red speckled edges. In good condition. Some gray marks on the back and corners, slightly marked edges. Interior well preserved despite some browned pages and scattered foxing (at the end of the volume). A beautiful copy.
The varied history presents itself as an eclectic collection of stories drawn from archaic, classical, and Hellenistic Greek history. Little constrained by historical accuracy, Elian creates historically improbable encounters, such as Socrates' conversation with members of the Academy or Pisistratus crossing paths with Themistocles. Elian compiles anecdotes taken from various ancient authors (Aristotle, Pliny, Ctesias, etc.) on a very wide range of topics. Thus, the collection begins with: 'Octopuses have a remarkable stomach and are unbeatable in their ability to swallow anything.' Elian then moves on to weaving textiles, followed by the frogs of Egypt. His reference authors are not named, and other sources show that he often alters the style of the excerpts he selects. The work is mainly valuable for preserving authors who are now lost.
Provenance: Coat of arms ex-libris of Lady Broughton on the endpaper.
