Boccioni was born in Reggio Calabria, his parents originally from Emilia-Romagna. When his father was transferred to Forlì, Umberto was only a few days old. He spent his childhood in that city. In 1906, he moved briefly to Paris, where he saw paintings by Cézanne and studied the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements in painting. He then spent three months in Russia, where he gained firsthand insight into the social unrest in that country and the shortcomings of the Russian government. In 1907, he returned to Italy. In 1910, he signed the Manifesto dei pittori futuristi (The Futurist Painters' Manifesto) with Carlo Carrà, Luigi Russolo, Giacomo Balla, and Gino Severini.
