Description from the seller

Original edition of the biography of Napoleon I written by Abel Hugo, brother of Victor Hugo, illustrated with 31 wood engravings after Charlet, engraved by Brévière, Lacoste, Godard... including a title vignette with the portrait of the emperor.
Printed text within a double black frame, chronology at the end of each chapter.

Attached is a handwritten text reproducing the work of Emmanuel de Las Cases: 'Sainte-Hélène Expedition. Translation of the remains of Emperor Napoleon. Order of the day of H.R.H. Prince de Joinville dated October 12, 1840.'
In French, manuscript on paper.
327 pages, brown ink, text inscribed within a frame in ink. Opposite the first page of the manuscript, a photocopy of the 'facsimile' of page 356 of the 1865 autograph by M. de Las Cases is attached.

At the time of this work's publication, although he died in 1821, Napoleon remains a central figure in France's political and cultural news. After the July 1830 Revolution, Bonapartist ideas experienced a resurgence of interest, and many hope that the new, more liberal regime will bring Napoleon's name back into favor. Furthermore, in the early 1830s, Napoleon's figure inspired many writers and artists. Victor Hugo, in his collection Les Feuilles d'automne (1831), evokes Napoleon's grandeur, while painters like Horace Vernet continue to glorify his battles.
