Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Adolphe Thiers is the author and Ary Scheffer the illustrator of the illustrated edition of Histoire de la Révolution française, with 46 plates and a map.
Description from the seller
Illustrated edition of this great classic of revolutionary historiography by Adolphe Thiers. Addressed to Furne in 10 octavo volumes, featuring charming half-cherry calf bindings, smooth spines decorated with cold-stamped floral motifs, gilded borders and tools, with titles in gilt lettering.
Our copy contains 46 engraved plates of portraits and historical scenes (6+8+5+5+5+6+4+4+2+1), mostly the work of Ary Scheffer, a famous Romantic painter, whose contribution as an illustrator is the most significant. It also includes a large fold-out map of the theater of war.
The speech given at the Académie française by Adolphe Thiers was added at the end of volume 10.
Decorative ensemble despite the rubbed leather, heads shaved in volumes I, 2, and 3, a fragment missing in volumes 8 and 10. Corners rubbed. Some traces on the covers. Scattered foxing and browned pages. Very good impression of the engravings, however.
Adolphe Thiers, the second president of the French Republic, and the first of the Third Republic, after the fall of the Empire, was also a journalist and historian. The History of the French Revolution, published in successive volumes from 1823 to 1827, was praised by Chateaubriand, Sainte-Beuve and Stendhal and enjoyed great success. It is the first comprehensive history of the French Revolution.
