Special and rare depiction of the Christian iconographic theme 'Potiphar's wife and Joseph'.
Originating from the Netherlands, 1650-1700
Story: Joseph was a very handsome and desirable man, making many women’s hearts beat faster. However, this was not something Joseph was interested in, and he wanted to keep it that way. Potiphar’s wife, who was an Egyptian noble at the court of the Pharaoh and had bought Joseph as a slave, wanted Joseph in her bed and made advances towards him. Joseph was not pleased with this. Potiphar’s wife grabbed Joseph by his cloak and said, 'Lie down with me in bed!' Joseph fled, leaving his cloak in the hands of the adulterous woman. Joseph managed to resist the temptation.
