ROMERO Ramírez, Perfecto (Cabaiguán, January 25, 1939).
He was the personal photographer of Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos.
Photojournalist. He began in 1955 with photographer Alfredo Rodríguez Peinado, taking commercial photographs. In 1958, he joined the 26th of July Movement and was part of Che Guevara's troop. He served as a war correspondent alongside photographer Sacura Yamoto (a Cuban of Japanese descent). During this period, he documented Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos' military actions during the liberation war (Fomento, Cabaiguán, Yaguajay, Guayo, Placetas, and Santa Clara). After April 1959, he worked for the magazine Verde Olivo until 1986, when he joined the weekly Palante, where he remains. In the 1960s, he documented political and military events such as the Fight against Bandits in the Sierra del Escambray and the May Day and July 26 celebrations each year. He was the official photographer who documented the preparation work (in Cuba and the USSR) of the first Cuban cosmonaut, Arnaldo Tamayo Mendez, during the joint Cuban-Soviet spaceflight. He served as a war correspondent in Angola and Nicaragua. His photographs have illustrated several books, including: Camilo, man and hero (2007); Havana of my heart, A Cuban photography celebration (2002); Che and the photography of the Cuban Revolution (2002); Camilo, Images in memory (1999); Che Guevara and the photography of Perfecto Romero (1997); Che and what (1993); Nothing is more important than a child (1979), among others.
