Description from the seller
Susanoo no Mikoto 素戔嗚男命 / Japanese Bicchu Kagura wooden folk craft mask
Susanoo no Mikoto 素戔嗚男命
He is also believed to be the god of storms and the god of exorcism. Although he was banished from the heavenly realm for his wild and violent behavior, he also has a strong sense of justice and wisdom, as evidenced by his success in defeating the Yamata-no-orochi, and can be said to be a multifaceted god. Because of this heroic aspect, he is sometimes worshipped as the god of war.
A dynamic wooden mask representing Susanoo no Mikoto, the storm god of Japanese mythology. Known for his fierce temperament and heroic deeds—including the slaying of the eight-headed serpent Yamata no Orochi—Susanoo embodies both destructive power and divine protection. This mask, carved during the Showa period, captures the intense energy associated with Susanoo through bold features: furrowed brows, wide eyes, and a grimacing mouth framed by a mustache and expressive contours. The craftsmanship reflects traditional folk carving techniques, with rope fittings for wear or display and signs of age that enhance its authenticity. Such masks were used in local festivals, shrine rituals, and theatrical performances to invoke strength, ward off misfortune, or dramatize mythological narratives. This piece offers collectors a rare glimpse into the intersection of Shinto belief, regional artistry, and performative tradition. A compelling artifact for collectors of Japanese mythology, ritual masks, and cultural heritage.
