Description from the seller
Expressive lithograph by Robert Motherwell (1915–1991), titled Beau Geste VIII, was produced in 1989 and belongs to an edition of only 35.
Executed with Motherwell's characteristic gestural style, the work features sweeping black and red forms on delicately textured paper, showcasing his mastery of minimal, yet emotionally charged abstraction.
Motherwell’s composition is a balance of spontaneity and structure—hallmarks of the Abstract Expressionist movement.
A key figure of the New York School, Motherwell was deeply engaged with philosophy and poetry, and was both a practitioner and theorist of abstract painting.
The Beau Geste series encapsulates his mature vision, marked by restraint, elegance, and intellectual rigor.
This work is hand-signed "RM" in the upper right corner, and numbered 24/35 in the lower right. The sheet also bears the artist’s blind stamp in the lower left.
Printed on fine wove paper, the sheet measures approximately 55.9 × 38.1 cm.
Robert Motherwell was one of the most important figures of post-war American art and a founding member of Abstract Expressionism. He is often associated with artists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Franz Kline, Ad Reinhardt, Clyfford Still, and Arshile Gorky. His influence extended through generations and inspired artists including Helen Frankenthaler (his wife for a time), Joan Mitchell, Lee Krasner, Cy Twombly, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Diebenkorn, Sam Francis, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Antoni Tàpies, Anselm Kiefer, Brice Marden, Sean Scully, Günther Förg, Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana, Kazuo Shiraga, and Zao Wou-Ki.
Condition:
good condition overall. The colours remain strong and the sheet is clean and well-preserved. There is a minor crease in one corner and a small cut near the edg. These flaws are unobtrusive and do not affect the central image.
