The road surface, which was then paved with gravel and asphalt, caused several fatal accidents among both drivers and spectators. The race was already stopped halfway through the race distance. The entrepreneur Carl Graham Fisher from Indiana, himself an avid racing driver, then had the race track renovated with 3.2 million bricks. On May 30, 1911, the Indianapolis 500 was held for the first time. The first winner was Ray Harroun, with an average speed of 120.060 km/h.
