Description from the seller
Larvikite skull – Northern Lights stone
515 g 9.10 x 6.50 x 6.00 cm impressive skull made from Larvikite - a very valuable EXQUISITE piece.
Larvikite (named after the city of Larvik in Norway) is a coarse-grained plutonic rock, a type of magmatic deep rock.
The bluish shimmering Larvikite is also called Syenite; it contains mica, augite, and hornblende and is often confused with the similarly appearing Labradorite. This Larvikite skull shows a slight bluish shimmer in many areas under lighting — we took the photos under different lighting conditions to demonstrate the variety of the stone's color play, depending on the lighting.
Material: Genuine Larvikite (monzonite with feldspar inclusions)
Colour: Deep dark silver-grey to anthracite with iridescent, silvery-bluish sparkle
Surface: Highly polished, with shimmering crystal plates – like captured northern lights in stone
Geology
The stone from which this skull was created comes from the barren, windswept coasts of Norway – Larvikite is a rock of magmatic origin, interspersed with feldspar crystals that flash in silvery to blue reflections when caught in the light – as if the Aurora Borealis were captured inside the stone.
Its shine does not come from color but from its structure: shimmering, plate-like crystals that break light and reflect it in an unpredictable play – sometimes icy blue, sometimes silver, sometimes like polished smoke.
Worldwide, Larvikite is regarded as the Stone of Venus – a stone of joy of life, the artist of pleasure and sensual enjoyment.
In the ancient legends of the Sámi and Nordic peoples, the stone was considered the 'stone of darkness that knows light.' Shamans regarded Larvikite as a medium for communicating with the spirits of ancestors and the North Wind. The stone was a companion of the night – not to spread fear, but to guide the inner compass when everything around was shrouded in shadows. It was thus a helper and protective stone.
Some say this skull is polished from the light of the North — a splinter from Heimdall's sword, fallen into the fjords when the sky first sent the northern lights. Those who look at it see not just the stone, but the space between light and dark, between the origin of time and the future.
Art object with a modern expression
The skull itself – an ancient symbol of change and insight – is transformed by the high-tech-like shine of Larvikite into a bridge between the archaic and the avant-garde.
Aesthetic: monochrome yet lively. Purist in material, full of inner movement in the play of light.
Appearance: Between Nordic rock landscape and digital art sculpture. Ideal as a centerpiece for modern spaces, collector installations, or object-based meditation.
