Palmyra, an ancient city of the Roman colony, is built in an oasis and prospered during the Roman era. The city's fate was linked to Queen Zenobia, the last to revolt against the Romans, who ultimately destroyed the city in 272/273 AD. Palmyra was an independent city after the conquest of Syria by the Seleucids and served as a trading post between the Euphrates and the Mediterranean Sea. The Greco-Roman tradition and the city's location at the crossroads of Roman and Parthian territories created the conditions necessary for the development of a unique culture.
The tokens (symbols, tesserae / tessères) of Palmyra, mentioned in the bibliography, constitute a particular category of ancient artifacts. These are tiles of various shapes, made almost exclusively of clay, bearing relief motifs on both sides. Experts have expressed the opinion that these objects played an important role in Palmyra's religious festivals, as they were used to access ceremonial meals or distributions after certain sacrifices. They date from the 1st to the 3rd century AD and provide important information about the deities of Palmyra and the Semitic religious history in general.
The earliest examples of the Tesseres of Palmyra are known from the first part of the 1st century A.D., and the later ones from the 3rd century A.D.
