Description from the seller
The volume contains a very scarce publication about the life and work of Beint Mankes (son of Jan Mankes).
Beint Mankes; Jan Willem Mankes (foreword) - Painter, Memoirs and Diaries - Laren, J.W. Mankes - 2012 - Dutch language - 1st edition - 496 pages - hardcover in linen binding with dust jacket - 248 x 180mm - condition: very good, minor signs of use on the dust jacket and linen binding.
In January 2013, the hardcover book Beint Mankes Life & Work was published, containing the memoirs and diaries of Beint Mankes (1918 - 1990), the son of Jan Mankes and Anne Zernike.
Beint Mankes writes about his youth in Tuindorp Vreewijk, holidays with his family, his special upbringing, his stay in London and Brussels. He describes how he earned his living as an advertising man and ultimately found his freedom — blood is thicker than water — as an artist and teacher at the Gooise Academie in Laren. Religion and politics play an important role in his life, and he shares his opinions on these topics extensively.
The period Beint Mankes writes about was a turbulent time, a period during which many developments—ranging from the rise of advertising to changes within the church—began to take shape. Beint Mankes describes his observations and thoughts on these developments; it is primarily because of this that the book will appeal to a wider audience. Not only art and advertising enthusiasts, but also those interested in recent history concerning religion, politics, and society, will find that a compelling picture of the era is created.
Work, among others, at the Centraal Museum Utrecht and in the collection of the municipality of Laren.
