Four volumes of Oeuvres illustrées de George Sand, a French-language illustrated edition (1852–1853) by J. Hetzel featuring drawings by Tony Johannot and Maurice Sand, bound in demi cuir with a bon condition and 623 pages.
Description from the seller
Four volumes of the works of George Sand (1804-1876), illustrated by Tony Johannot and Maurice Sand, published by Jules Hetzel. This edition normally includes nine volumes published from 1852 to 1856, but today it is difficult to assemble the complete collection that includes several of her major works, with new prefaces and notices written by the author herself.
These illustrated works are adorned with engravings based on drawings by Tony Johannot, a renowned 19th-century illustrator and engraver, as well as Maurice Sand (1823-1889), the son of George Sand. Tony Johannot provided the drawings for most of the early volumes, while Maurice Sand made a more significant contribution from 1853 onwards. The collaborative work with engravers like Delaville, especially for the creation of wood engravings, is also notable in this edition.
Regarding the content of this collection, it brings together several famous novels and stories by George Sand, such as Little Fadette, The Devil's Pool, as well as lesser-known texts like The Castle of the Deserts, Lavinia, Isidora, Kourroglou, The Ogre, among others, spread across the four volumes.
Half-brown calfskin binding with smooth decorated spine. The bindings are slightly rubbed, with epidermures and small tears in the leather; other defects are minor.
