Born a commoner on August 19, 1743, in Vaucouleurs, Jeanne Bécu, also known as Jeanne Bécu de Cantigny, was the last mistress of King Louis XV, from 1768 to 1774. She owed her social rise to her great beauty. Several prominent gentlemen of the French high nobility were her lovers and taught her court manners and protocol. Becoming Countess of Barry through marriage, she was known as Madame du Barry. Presented to King Louis XV, he immediately fell under her charm, which led her to the highly coveted position of royal mistress. Condemned by the revolutionaries, she was guillotined in Paris on December 8, 1793.
