Iwami Kagura masks are made by layering dozens of sheets of tough Sekishu washi paper with glue containing persimmon tannins. They are lightweight and sturdy, and can withstand the intense movements of Kagura. As each Kagura group tries to create their own unique mask, there are a huge number of different types, and one of the joys of Kagura is seeing the differences in the expressions of each mask. In recent years, masks have become popular not only for stage use, but also as lucky charms and decorations.
