Original Taisho-period hand-painted silk hanging scroll attributed to Shimomura Kanzan, 211 cm high by 71 cm wide, titled Absolute Auction, showing autumn foliage; origin Japan, hand signed, in good condition.
Description from the seller
A striking large-format Japanese hanging scroll from the Taisho period, attributed to the renowned Nihonga master Shimomura Kanzan(下村観山 1873-1930).
Kanzan is celebrated as one of the founders of modern Japanese Nihonga painting and a leading figure of the Tokyo Fine Arts School. His works are characterized by refined brushwork, elegant composition, and a deep poetic sense rooted in classical Japanese aesthetics.
This impressive scroll depicts an exquisitely detailed natural scene, featuring autumn foliage, delicate vines, and forest vegetation painted with Kanzan’s characteristic grace and color harmony. The combination of vibrant pigments, controlled ink lines, and subtle shading creates a rich decorative atmosphere suitable for collectors of Nihonga, botanical art, and classical Japanese painting.
The scale of the work is notably large, enhancing its decorative impact in contemporary interiors.

Dear Valued Buyers in Europe, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you. Thanks to your continued support, I have been able to carry on my business for more than ten years. As of June 28, 2025, new regulations have taken full effect in the European Union concerning the importation of cultural property from outside the EU. Under these rules, when items are classified as “Cultural Property” or as antiques over 100 years old, and they are not accompanied by an Export Permit for Cultural Property, certain restrictions may apply under both Italian law and EU regulations. This Export Permit for Cultural Property has traditionally been required when exporting items such as swords, and obtaining it generally takes about one month. For this reason, when shipping hanging scrolls that are more than 100 years old, I will continue to use the same HS code as for those less than 100 years old. I sincerely ask for your kind understanding regarding this matter. With gratitude and respect,
