Original Soviet ceremonial banner made of red textile with gold inscriptions and fringe, issued as a Transitional Banner for top performance in Socialist Competition, dating from the late 1970s–early 1980s and in good condition.
Description from the seller
An authentic and impressive Soviet ceremonial award banner from the late 1970s–early 1980s, used as an official Transitional Banner (Переходящее знамя) for celebrating collective achievements in Socialist Competition and Plan Fulfillment. These banners were awarded to top-performing factories, educational institutions, military units, and state organizations during formal ceremonies organized by Communist Party committees, councils, and ministries.
Made of rich red ceremonial fabric (silk/satin type), decorated with gold-painted slogans, printed State Emblem of the USSR with 15 republic ribbons, silver ornamental border, and original gold fringe. The text and emblem are printed using metallic gold paint, giving the banner a ceremonial prestige and strong visual authority.
Front side features the official Soviet propaganda slogan:
“Труд в СССР —
есть дело чести,
дело славы,
дело доблести
и геройства!”
"Labour in the USSR is a matter of honour, glory, valour, and heroism!"
A famous quote frequently seen in Soviet propaganda during the Cold War era — displayed in ministries, schools, factories, military academies, and state parades.
Reverse inscription (gold metallic paint):
“Переходящее знамя
за высокие показатели
выполнения плана
в социалистическом соревновании.”
Transitional Banner
for high performance in fulfilling the production plan
and Socialist Competition.
These award textiles were used during:
• Official state and Party award ceremonies
• Annual Socialist Competition recognition events
• Factory and military honour presentations
• Cold War propaganda celebrations and public exhibitions
• Ministry-level achievements and labour awards
Historical Significance
During the Cold War period, such banners were important tools of political symbolism and ideological motivation. They represented excellence, discipline, productivity, and loyalty to the Communist Party. Displayed prominently in government buildings, factories, schools, military offices, and Houses of Culture, they were highly prestigious and strictly controlled by the state.
This type of banner is a strong visual example of Soviet Socialist Realism, political propaganda design, and Cold War ideological messaging. Large-format banners of this type were not sold to the public, but strictly produced for ceremonial use — making original surviving examples very rare.
Today, authentic banners in large ceremonial format with original inscriptions, metallic lettering, and intact fringe are highly sought after by collectors, museums, decorators, historical institutions, and film studios.
Dimensions
Approx. 100 × 120 cm (without fringe)
Condition
• Original authentic item – not a reproduction
• Fabric shows signs of age: light fading, small spots, minor punctures, traces of ceremonial use
• Gold-painted inscriptions partially aged but still clearly visible

• Good preservation for its age (approx. 45–50 years old)
• Suitable for display, framing, museum installation, or Cold War-themed interior design
