This vintage Japanese obidome features the auspicious motif of six gourds, hand-carved from wood and finished with warm natural tones. Known as “mubyō” (six gourds), the design is a classic good-luck symbol associated with protection, good health and long life. The motif comes from a wordplay: “six gourds” (rokubyō) sounds like “mubyō,” meaning “free from illness,” making it a cherished charm for well-being and harmony.
Traditionally, an obidome is worn with kimono by sliding it onto the obijime cord to add elegance and a touch of personal style. This piece has a carved signature on the reverse, and the original wooden box is signed and sealed.
For modern use, obidome are also widely enjoyed outside of kimono culture. Many collectors use them as stylish scarf slides or decorative sash accessories, giving them new versatility while preserving their traditional beauty.
Good to very good used condition with minor sings of use. Please check the photos for details.
