Signed autograph letter from Frédéric Mistral, addressed to André Godard, dated November 7, 1909, in Maillane (Provence).
Written in black ink on a double sheet of laid paper, with its original stamped and postmarked envelope.
Mistral, in the evening of his life, thanks his correspondent for sending his work Les Madones Comtadines, which he announces he wishes to keep in the library of the Museon Arlaten, his major museum work dedicated to Provence.
Dear fellow, the Comtadine Madonnas will be displayed and preserved in the Museon Arlaten library as one of those works of art that enrich the 'treasures' of our old cathedrals. [...] You are the good Christian, the fervent Catholic who has just made a firm resolution in confession to no longer sin, and who, in the face of beauty—let's say the beauty of the devil—falls back with a certain pleasure, the pleasure that is life! [...] That is why it is of great interest for us to read you. [...]
Beautiful letter imbued with verve and humanism, in which Mistral expresses his attachment to Provençal culture and the beauty of local religious art, while offering a spiritual reflection filled with humor and warmth.
