Description from the seller

Massive silver-plated money box – French work, late 19th century

Grand Ciborium of very high quality, made of sterling silver with partial vermeil gold plating, fully stamped.
The main visible hallmark is a goldsmith's lozenge (difficult to identify in a photo, but typical of a Parisian or Lyonnais goldsmith from the second half of the 19th century). The overall piece is homogeneous, with no reassembly.

Decor and iconography

The lobed foot is adorned with three patinated silver medallions, finely sculpted in high relief, depicting figures of Christ: Christ Suffering, Christ Crowned with Thorns, Christ in Prayer / Ecce Homo.
The other three lobes feature a pierced neo-Gothic decoration, typical of French liturgical workshops around 1880–1900.

The stem is structured by a flattened, richly engraved knot, ensuring an excellent grip.

The cup, wide and deep, is entirely gilded. The outer band, made of non-gilded silver, is finely engraved with a Latin inscription. The silver/gilding contrast is very skillfully controlled.

The original lid is perfectly fitted and topped with a pierced cross. Same finish, same stamping.

Quality of execution

This chalice is clearly a piece of high liturgy, not a common series.
Very deep engraving.
Thick antique gilding.
Silver medals with applied relief, crafted as true miniature relief sculptures.
Uniform work, at the level of a specialized workshop in Paris or Lyon.

Technical description
Materials: solid silver, very thick mercury gilding; patinated silver decoration for the medallions.
Height: 32 cm
Estimated weight: probably 900 g.

Very good overall condition, golding intact, some signs of use inside the cup.

Very beautiful neo-Gothic ciborium in solid silver gilt, complete with its lid, richly decorated and in excellent condition. A serious piece for a demanding collector or liturgical use.
