Description from the seller
Ancient painting, oil on canvas, from the 19th century, depicting Saint Philomena.
A refined devotional depiction of Saint Philomena, a young martyr recognizable by her traditional iconographic attributes: the palm of martyrdom, the arrows symbolizing her passion, and the large anchor, an emblem of hope and steadfast faith. The saint, wrapped in a flowing red cloak over a white dress, wears a crown of flowers on her head, a symbol of purity and spiritual victory. She is depicted in a serene lake and mountain landscape, with a village in the background and a clear sky, typical of the Romantic-devotional sensibility of the 19th century.
The work displays the characteristics of sacred painting in the Lombardy-Piedmontese area of the mid-19th century, linked to the academic and religious workshops active between Milan, Novara and Turin.
The clean and controlled drawing, the compact chromatic fills, and the softness of the faces evoke post-neoclassical and purist figurative culture, which sought balance and simplicity in the depiction of sacred subjects.
The depiction of the isolated figure against a landscape background and the sentimental tone of the image bring it closer to the contemporary popular devotional production, intended for oratories, convents, and private collections.
In fairly good general condition considering the age of the painting, which shows a surface patina consistent with its age. Some scattered restoration points are noticeable, along with glazes and fine surface cracks in the pictorial surface, overall limited in extent and not at all compromising the readability of the depiction. The craquelure is uniform and attributable to the period, with no signs of active detachment. No conservation issues are evident. The original canvas does not appear to be relined and does not seem to require intervention. The wooden frame, which appears to be contemporaneous with the canvas, is in good structural condition despite its thinness, which makes it quite delicate.
The painting is presented in an elegant frame of classic taste but from a more recent era. Small defects and restorations of the same are noted. The frame is included as a courtesy and does not form an integral part of the artwork; any damages to it will not be grounds for complaint or order cancellation.
Painting size: 77 x 61 cm - Frame size: 87 x 71 cm
