A very RARE and beautiful set...a milestone of Polar exploration!!! ""Farthest North"; Being the Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship "Fram" 1893 - 96 and of a Fifteen Months' Sleigh Journey by Dr. Nansen and Lieut. Johansen With an appendix by Otto Sverdrup"published by Constable in 1897...Frontispiece in each volume (one etched, one engraving). "About 120 Full-page and numerous Illustrations, 16 Colored Plates in Facsimile from Dr. Nansen's Own Sketches, Etched Portrait, engravings, and Maps". Folded Maps at end of vol. 1 and vol. 2 in overall very condition for age-a few repair on margins!!!!! Original green cloth with gold lettering on top and spine. Gilt vignette of the "Fram" on top cover of vol. 1, of a polar scene on top of vol. 2. Externally boards a bit bowed, wear around edges and corners, corners bruised, shelfwear, gilt a bit faded, light stains on boards, cloth with a bit of wear.
Inside books complete, scattered light foxing and stains, text readable, overall plates good- one colour plate in vol 1 with wear on margins. Binding a little shaky but all pages attached. Ex library books with only signs a sticker on front pastedowns.
