Two striking volumes on the end of the Soviet Empire, both signed by Boris Mikhailov in gold ink on the title page. Boris Mikhailov was born in Karkov, Ukraine, during the Soviet Union era. The title of the first volume references a play by Maxim Gorky, 'The Lower Depths,' about the lives of the wrecked, the poor, and the marginalized in Tsarist Russia, and the second volume's title could be translated as 'Between Dogs and Wolves' or 'Dusk,' the time of day between day and night. The photographs were taken on the streets of Kiev and Kharkov using a Horizont panoramic camera made in Kharkov itself. In the first volume, the photographs are treated in sepia brown, the color of earth, dust, and dirt, while those in the second volume are treated in blue sepia, a color that, for Mikhailov, represents war, hunger, and misery. 'At dusk, a nightmare veil envelops streets that seem haunted by the damned.'
