Scena drammatica, a 19th‑century oil on canvas from France, framed.
Description from the seller
Mark on the back: Stamp of the fabric supplier GILABOD (Paris)
Period: ca. 1800–1840
Dimensions without frame: 40 × 32 cm
Dimensions with frame: 55 × 48 × 8 cm
Frame: Antique gilded wooden frame, original or contemporary
Condition: The canvas shows signs of aging and small color losses, visible in the photographs. The painted surface shows craquelure and light abrasions. The frame shows wear and oxidation consistent with the age of the work.
This oil on canvas is an interesting example of narrative painting from the early 19th-century French school, crafted with a strong theatrical structure and dramatic use of chiaroscuro. The scene depicts two figures lifting a large drape, revealing a body on the ground, in a context rich in emotional tension. The pictorial language, with energetic brushstrokes and masses of light emerging from the dark background, places the work in the French Romantic tradition, close to the aesthetics of Eugène Delacroix and the academic painters active between the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The back bears the stamp "GILABOD," a Parisian supplier of canvases and art materials active in the 19th century. This mark confirms French production and helps date the work.
The gilded wooden frame, of notable presence and probably contemporary, further enhances the composition.
A work of historical and collectors' interest, with a strong narrative component and a beautiful rendering of light typical of French Romantic painting.
