The natsume features a black lacquer surface decorated with gold and red plum blossoms intertwined with flowing arabesque vines. Plum blossoms symbolise perseverance and renewal, blooming even in late winter, while the arabesque pattern conveys wishes for longevity and unbroken prosperity. These motifs have long been cherished in Japanese tea aesthetics for their auspicious meanings. Wajima lacquerware is known for its exceptional durability and elegance. Each piece is crafted through approximately 23 stages and more than 124 individual processes, building up a firm base layer and multiple coats of lacquer. The delicate lines and fine detailing on this piece reflect meticulous craftsmanship and the refined beauty characteristic of traditional Wajima work. The accompanying tea caddy is in the taikai (“large sea”) form, identifiable by its wide mouth and gently flattened body. Its dark, glossy glaze is enriched by a flowing, milky-blue cascade of glaze down the shoulder, creating a striking contrast reminiscent of falling water. This piece comes with a beautifully woven silk brocade pouch, enhancing its traditional appeal. There is light wear from age, including a few spots and minor yellowing on the lid of the tea caddy, but the set remains in good used condition. Please refer to the photos for details.
