Description from the seller

Byzantine-style chased silver crucifix — Anatolia or Levant, 18th century
Mount Athos?

Silver crucifix (800/1000 fineness), finely chiseled on both sides.
Each side illustrates a major scene from the life of Christ:
• The obverse depicts the Crucifixion, framed by the figures of the Virgin, Saint John and angels in adoration;
• The reverse side depicts the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan, being blessed by Saint John the Baptist under the gaze of angels.

The decoration is punctuated by frames with motifs of beaded circles and stylized scrolls, in the Byzantine and post-Byzantine iconographic tradition of the workshops of the Levant or Anatolia. Some vestiges of turquoise and yellow blue enamels remain in the halos and backgrounds, highlighting the original richness of the piece.

The crucifix rests on a pyramidal pedestal decorated with floral crosshatching and a slender, faceted shaft.
A work of fine quality, in the style and technique characteristic of the 18th century Eastern Christian period.

Dimensions: height 18.5 cm
Weight: 151.5 g
Material: silver (800/1000)
Probable origin: Anatolia or Levant, 18th century

Condition: good overall condition, signs of wear, slight traces of missing enamel, original patina preserved.
