Description from the seller
A six-panel paper folding screen decorated with pigments, gold leaf and gold dust, depicting a scene set within a complex of palaces with vermilion roofs and open pavilions. The work shows groups of aristocrats engaged in formal moments and courtly life.
The composition combines architectural and natural elements, with ancient pines, ornamental rocks, and flowering trees. The gold clouds articulate the reading of the screen and create transitions between the settings, while the details of the garments and furnishings are rendered with care.
The panels are framed by two elegant silk borders, while a lacquered wooden frame completes and protects the screen.
The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider.
Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings.
---The byobu is in good condition, with minor wear consistent with age. Some discoloration, especially along the joints of the gilding, and small defects along the joints of the first and sixth panels. Imperfections to the paper on the reverse. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped via DHL or FedEx, accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity issued by Mastromauro Japanese art gallery based in Milan, Italy.
