Kees Bastiaans, Stilleven met beeldhouwwerk, an oil painting, original edition, 1942, 103 x 93 cm with frame, hand-signed, in good condition, from the Netherlands and sold by Galerie.
Description from the seller
Kees Bastiaans (1909–1986) was a Dutch painter best known for his expressive, often religiously inspired work. Originating from Zeeland and working for a long time in Noord-Brabant, he developed a completely unique style characterized by bold colors, distorted figures, and a direct, emotional visual language. His subjects ranged from biblical scenes and saints to village figures, landscapes, and portraits.
Bastiaans is often regarded as one of the expressionists within Dutch post-war art. His paintings show a strong connection to the Catholic countryside in which he lived, and sometimes hover on the border of mysticism and earthly humanity. Despite being self-taught, he managed to develop a recognizable, authentic voice that grants him a special place in Dutch art history.
This still life depicts an intriguing combination of objects that collectively evoke a dark, almost dramatic atmosphere. Central is a small sculpture-like female figure, which stands out in the light against the heavy, deep brown and dark blue draperies in the background. The play of light and shadow emphasizes her sculptural form and gives the scene an almost symbolic charge.
In the foreground lies a large, dark bowl whose gloss is subtly captured in the sparse light. Next to it are two lemons, offering a sharp color contrast within the otherwise muted palette with their bright yellow-green hues. The composition is carefully constructed, with strong, expressive brushstrokes and a rich texture characteristic of Bastiaans’ handwriting.
Dimensions of work with frame: 103 x 93 cm
Dimensions of the work without frame: 82 x 72 cm
